Call to worship

(based on Psalm 17

One: Enter God’s gates with lips free of deceit and tongues free of slander.

All: We will avoid the ways of the violent, and keep our feet on the paths of peace.

One: Enter God’s sanctuary with thanksgiving and find refuge from the storm.

All: We come before the Lord with gratitude to behold God’s face in righteousness.

One: Come! Let us worship the Lord and touch eternity.

All: We will behold God’s likeness and be satisfied.

Opening Music:

“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”  UMH 384 (v1-3)

Performed by:  Bob Wuertz, organ

  1. Love divine, all loves excelling,
    joy of heaven, to earth come down;
    fix in us thy humble dwelling;
    all thy faithful mercies crown!

    Jesus, thou art all compassion,
    pure, unbounded love thou art;
    visit us with thy salvation;
    enter every trembling heart.

2. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit
    into every troubled breast!
    Let us all in thee inherit;
    let us find that second rest.

    Take away our bent to sinning;
    Alpha and Omega be;
    end of faith, as its beginning,
    set our hearts at liberty.

3. Come, Almighty to deliver,
    let us all thy life receive;
    suddenly return and never,
    nevermore thy temples leave.

    Thee we would be always blessing,
    serve thee as thy hosts above,
    pray and praise thee without ceasing,
    glory in thy perfect love.

Morning Prayer

Mighty God, pour out your power and strength on us. Grant us the nourishment we need to receive your word. Search our hearts and know us thoroughly. Struggle with us, wrestle with us, strive with us until the dawn, O God, for we will not let you go. And when we open our hearts to the light of your love, may your presence fill our lives and carry us forth, preparing us to be your people and equipping us to do your work in the world. In your holy name, we pray. Amen.

Children’s Time

Joys and Concerns

Prayer of Confession (Unison)

God of mystery and power, in the midst of our fears and doubts, you call us home. Too often, when we are weary, we lack the courage to take time apart to regain our strength. Too often, when our faith wavers, we seek safety in our own clever schemes. Too often, when faced with those in need, we throw up our hands in defeat, sure that there is nothing we can do. Stay with us when we have need of you, O God, and bless us in our struggles, that we might be a blessing for others.

Words of Assurance:

One: Awaken to the good news of God’s love: In Christ, we are forgiven and given strength for the journey. Rise up and see God face to face as you are fed by God’s gracious hand. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

All: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Amen.

“Hold On, My Child”

Performed by: Dr. Pam Rosemier

Doxology:

UMH 94

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise God, all creatures here below:
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise God, the source of all our gifts!
Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts!
Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Prayer of Thanksgiving (Unison)

Gracious God, we offer our gifts to you, asking you to dedicate them to do the work of love and compassion in the world. We learned from Jesus, who had compassion on the crowds who gathered to hear him teach, that putting what we have in the hands of Jesus can bring abundance. Multiply these gifts with the love in which they are offered, that they might bring hope to those in need and might glorify and celebrate your love for all your children. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving

The Lord’s Prayer:

Carolyn Boline

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,
    as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Closing Music:
