The Spiritual Journey
People use interesting phrases to describe themselves when they are thinking of their faith. They might say they are agnostic and wondering, or spiritual though not a fan of the institutional church; they might say they go to church or belong to a particular church; they might say they are a follower of Jesus, or even a disciple of Christ. All of these self-descriptive phrases refer to the spiritual journey, as the soul awakens to God and acts upon this awareness by growing or developing further toward God-consciousness and spiritual maturity.
During September and October, I am going to preach a sermon series on growing in grace, the development of faith, the practice of discipleship. A number of religious scholars speak about the stages of faith and the growth of discipleship that add some modern perspectives to the biblical witness of Jesus and his followers. I believe it will be helpful for us to think about where we are on our spiritual journey and how we might intentionally nudge ourselves forward in our lives of faith, as well as thinking about how we as a congregation help anyone who comes through our doors do the same. This is the primary focus of the church after all – helping people connect with God and then through that connection grow into the person God would have them be.
Make a point of scheduling church on your calendar this fall. I look forward to seeing you in worship.
