Beyond Our Five Senses

The Disciple Thomas has long been known as the doubting Disciple, and has been painted in such a way that can lead Christians and non-believers to think that doubt and faith are mutually exclusive. Could this assumption be a mistake, though? Could Thomas be the most relatable of all the disciples to people living in our modern fact-seeking culture? Could doubt actually benefit our spiritual growth?

Core Principle: Jesus as Savior

Disciples welcome the saving grace of God into their lives through faith in Christ Jesus, experiencing forgiveness of sins and new life in the Spirit. They are transformed people, and seek to be remade further and further into God’s image with the mid of Christ, growing in wisdom and spiritual depth while confronting self-defeating behaviors and thoughts. They strive to grow into healthy, emotionally well-balanced, and spiritually mature people, who live with a deepening awareness of and gratitude for this unmerited gift of God’s love.

Core Principle: Jesus as Lord

Disciples give their ultimate allegiance to God in Christ. They place Christ as the center-point of their lives, realizing their purpose in life and values for living from Christ. They follow their Lord’s teachings by letting love lead in their thoughts, words, and deeds, while acting with a servant’s heart and working for peace and justice in their local community and the larger world. They connect belief to behavior and walk their talk.

Core Principle: Love of Neighbor … through Justice Ministries

Transformed by God’s love, disciples hear the call of Christ to love their neighbor as themselves. The Golden Rule sets the standard for the love of neighbor – “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” Disciples do this in all the little daily encounters of their lives, their congregational relationships, and through the connectional nature of the denomination, by engaging in an intentional pattern of Justice Ministries.
Disciples love their neighbor by working for constructive change in society that transforms social patterns and alters laws that discriminate against or marginalize people, through letter writing campaigns, public witnessing, vigils, lobbying, community organizing, and speaking the truth to power. Disciples are always seeking to further actualize God’s Kingdom among us and willingly work in partnership with other community groups and organizations of good-will.

Core Principle: Love of Neighbor … through Acts of Compassion

Transformed by God’s love, disciples hear the call of Christ to love their neighbor as themselves. The Golden Rule sets the standard for the love of neighbor – “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” Disciples do this in all the little daily encounters of their lives, their congregational relationships, and through the connectional nature of the denomination, by engaging in an intentional pattern of Compassionate Acts.

Disciples love their neighbors by being compassionate to people in need and personally extending assistance to them through concrete acts of caring and support. Examples of this would be participating in Interfaith Shelter Ministry, Habitat for Humanity, and mission trips, stocking food pantries and clothing drops, visitation to ailing, lonely, or detained people, as well as other specific individual acts of emotional and physical support or financial charity.

Core Principle: Love of God … through Public Worship

Transformed by God’s love, disciples seek to love the Lord their God with their whole being. They want to grow in their love and knowledge of God and keep spiritually connected to the nurturing and renewing source of their lives.
Disciples do this through engaging in an intentional pattern of Public Worship. Disciples seek to love their Lord through acts of celebration and faith expression with other gathered believers as they regularly attend weekly Sunday services and special seasonal services, and frequently partake in the Lord’s Supper.
