The Power of Evil

The Power of Evil

Reading about the capture of Ratko Mladic, a long sought after war criminal from the Balkin Wars of the 1990s, my wife asked me “Why does it seem so easy to mobilize so many people to do evil when it is so hard to mobilize a few people to do good?”  I blanched.  She had made an observation about humanity that most of us try hard to avoid.  Human nature is not that innocent.

I like to think the church is one of those positive forces in our society that works on our nature, altering it for the better.   It’s a daunting task though, we seem to default so easily to selfishness, pride, and hubris.  And think about it… how much time does the church have anyway to affect even those who willingly come under its influence, let alone those who stand outside its circle taking potshots at it or ignoring it all together?  An hour or two on occasional weeks is the common answer.  That’s not much time to be life-transforming, even if the church is dynamic and spirit-filled.

God help us.
