"Tackling Tough Topics"
During the month of July 2012, I did a sermon series entitles "Tackling Tough Topics" and preached on Church State Relations, Creation & Evolution, Biblical Authority, Gender & Sexuality, and Other Faiths. The series was stimulated by a book one of our church Library Ladies dropped on my desk, 10 Things Your Minister Wants to Tell You (But Can't Because He Needs the Job, by Rev. Oliver "Buzz" Thomas. I took the dare and launched the series. I was pleased with how well the series was received. Take the opportunity to click on the sermon section of the web page and take a listen.
In the series I make references to certain books that I have found helpful in developing my thought on the various topics or that I know would be good resources for gaining additional understanding. Not an exhaustive bibliography on the topics, just a quick list of some good resources for additional reflection.
Church / State Relations: God's Politics, by Jim Wallis. The Broken Covenant, by Robert N. Bellah. Christian Perspectives on Politics, by J. Philip Wogaman.
Creation & Evolution: Ancient Near Eastern Texts, ed. by James B. Pritchard. The Power of Myth, Joseph Campbell. The Divine Milieu, by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.
Biblical Authority: The Five Gospels, Robert W. Funk, Roy W. Hoover, and The Jesus Seminar. An Introduction to the New Testament, Raymond E. Brown. Reading the Bible Again for the First Time, Marcus J. Borg. The New Testament World: Insights from Cultural Anthhropology, by Bruce J. Malina.
Gender & Sexuality: Gaia and God, by Rosemary Radford Ruether. In Memory of Her: A Feminist Theological Reconstruction of Christian Origins, by Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza. Homosexuality and Christian Community, ed. by Choon-Leong Seow. Homosexuality in the Church: Both Sides of the Debate, ed. by Jeffrey S. Siker.

Happy and insformative reading! Pastor Walt.
