Here at LJUMC our ministry for children is excited to partner with you to help your children grow mentally, spiritually and emotionally. Whether it be one of our Sunday morning classes, our children’s choir, Vacation Bible School, family or age level camps, youth ministry or seasonal events, there is always a place for your family.
In Sunday School children will come to know the wonders of God’s love with lessons that cover the Bible over a three-year period. This Fall we will be covering some of the most familiar stories of the Bible. Our goal is that though Bible stories, activities, crafts, videos and games you child’s faith will grow by “leaps and bounds.”
Each Sunday Children begin in the worship service, and are excused to Chapel on the first Sunday of the month and to Sunday School classes on the other Sundays. Also, on the first Sunday of the month, children are brought back into worship for communion. On the remaining Sundays they can be picked-up following worship on the playground or in the classrooms.
Children have the opportunity to sing in the La Jolla UMC children’s choir and perform in church throughout the year. Choir practice is after church (11:00 am) four Sundays in a row directly preceding each performance.
Each summer La Jolla UMC offers Vacation Bible School to its members and the community. This week long day camp takes place for a few hours each morning for children 3 years old to entering 5th grade. Children participate in music, crafts, science experiments, games, snack, storytelling, and more. The following Sunday is a VBS celebration when children sing in church and share with the congregation what they learned at camp. Following the service is an ice cream celebration.
Each September La Jolla UMC gives bibles to the fourth graders. The bibles are signed by the pastor of the church and presented to the children in a ceremony during the worship service.
Throughout the year La Jolla UMC offers a variety of special events for children. These include the annual Christmas workshop, live unrehearsed nativity scene on Christmas Eve, Easter egg hunt, and more.
The San Diego District United Methodist Church hosts a younger and older elementary camp every summer at Camp Cedar Glen in Julian, CA. Children from all over San Diego County are invited to attend. The camps are planned, funded and run by the Methodist Churches and sponsored by the United Methodist Cal-Pac Conference. At camp, children participate in age appropriate activities such as bible study, small group discussion, worship, singing, skits, archery, rock climbing, high ropes challenge course, hiking, crafts, group games, swimming, and much more. Every night is closed with a campfire. Registration begins in early February. See www.calpaccamps.org for more information.
