This group meets from 8:30 to 9:30 AM on Sunday mornings in the church’s Fireside Library. Its intent is to study current events and how they should be interpreted in light of our Christian heritage and tradition. As a guide, we subscribe to a Methodist publication named Faithlink, which is e-mailed to members the preceding Tuesday. While that week’s subject usually forms the basis for discussion, the leader for that Sunday also has the option to choose other issues in which they have a particular interest.
As might be expected, many diverse opinions are represented within the group, and discussions tend to be quite lively. It is our goal to present fairly all sides of the issue. All are welcome to join in helping us discern our role in these issues and how they relate to LJUMC.
Your Fireside Library volunteers committee under the leadership of Susan Russell has arranged for a new season of reviews by people who love books. They will cover a wide variety of books.
In 2017 we have Lloyd Russell the dean of our reviewer group. We have Cherie Hulse who brings a special touch of book discussion fun. We have Mary Lee Delafield from Warwick’s to entice you with great book ideas for Christmas time reading or gifting.
In 2018 we have Denise Blickenstaff to lead the way. She has a special fondness for our library and its wonderful collection of books for little kids, and senior kids too. Don Lincoln will bring us his special book review touch. Lori Leopold will bring us the welcome of her caring company plus a review of a good book. We are pleased to have Don Rushing to cover an important world topic. Also Pastor Phil an avid reader of books will discuss one or more of his choices with us.
This is quite a line-up of accomplished reviewers to complete our book talk season. Our book talks are from October through May on the first Wednesday of each month at 1:30 PM in the Fireside Library and last for one hour or so.
Lloyd Russell will review High Noon: The making of an American classic and the Hollywood Blacklist authored by Glenn Frankel. From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Searchers, this non fiction book is the revelatory story behind the classic movie High Noon and the toxic political climate in which it was created.
Throughout the year, La Jolla UMC provides Bible and topical studies covering topics such as Advent and Lent.
